Question:

Okay so this is really starting to worry me?

A while back, I got my first pair of glasses (I am nearsighted). Exactly one year later, I had my eyes rechecked and got a completely new prescription, as the glasses weren't doing much good for me anymore.

The new prescription lasted two, maybe three months. After this short amount of time, the glasses did absolutely nothing. Another prescription. 3 more months. Another prescription, my current prescription for contacts, is about four months old, and it does nothing anymore. I stopped using the left contact, but the right still does a little so I keep it in.

At this point, without visual aid, I can't make out a family member's face from across a room, or pick out a friend in a crowd, much less make out the big E at the top of the chart.

No one in my family has sight problems, and I take care of my eyes. No tv, very little computer. The most worrying thing about all of this is, I'm barely 16. Does any one have any idea what is wrong with me?

  1. I almost had the same problem dont worry.  Your eyes arent stable yet because you are still young.  Just dont wear contacts yet, cuz your prescription is not definite.

  2. Hello.  Eye problems can be the beginning of bigger problems.  With your eyesight changing so rapidly you need to look at other aspects of you health.  Rapid eye changes can be a symptom of many things for example multiple sclerosis.  go to webmd.com and look around that to see what else could be going on.

  3. Have you been checked for diabetes? It causes eye problems.  A simple blood test will do it.

Get a regular check with a MD. Measles causes eye problems too.

  4. Your vision may continue to change as you grow but will hopefully stabilize when you reach your late teens to early 20's.  I suggest that you ask your eye doc about the problems you are experiencing and if there is anything that can be done to help stabilize your vision at this point.

I heard that there are some hard contact lenses that help slow the progression of myopia (nearsightedness) but I am not sure if they would be a good treatment option at your age.

You can also try a vision improvement program to see if it will stabilize and/or possibly even improve your vision.  I tried the one at this website and modified some of the exercises because I have strabismus and my brain does not perceive 3D images correctly.  Some of the exercises required the ability to perceive 3D images and they gave me bad headaches.

I was mildly farsighted with a moderate amount of astigmatism in my left eye.  I was able to completely correct the farsightedness in my right eye, lowered the spherical portion of my prescription in my left eye to a point where I no longer correct for it at all.  The prescription for astigmatism did not change at all though.  I achieved results but they were not entirely what I hoped the achieve.  I was still satisfied with the program and learned alot from it.

Please keep in mind that vision improvement programs do not work for everyone and you may not always achieve the results you want and it takes alot of time and dedication on your part to achieve any results.  It can also be a slow process as well.

Many eye care professionals do not support vision improvement programs so you will likely hear mixed opinions on the subject.  I personally believe they work, but you have to be really dedicated to doing the exercises everyday.

Here is my take on the money aspect and possible loss in  attempting this program.  I ordered the electronic version of the book for $24.95.  One box of contact lenses for me is about $40.00 at the cheapest website I can find them since I require a toric lens.  My last pair of glasses cost me over $100.00 for a cheap pair.  I thought this was a small price to pay for the possibility of improving my vision.  I feel that it paid off since I now only correct the astigmatism in my left eye and cut the cost of contact lenses in half.

I wish you the best of luck and apologize for my novel here.  I tend to get wordy when I am sleepy.
