Okay...this is a strange question, but.....?

For all the veg*ns out there, are you okay with people cooking meat or meat-related foods in your dishes?

I just found out that I'm really weirded out by it.

My best friend is having a huge birthday bash in the next couple weeks. Sloppy joes and warm shredded chicken sandwiches are on the menu. My mother asked for my crock pot as she is going to make two huge batches of the chicken for him.

Just the idea of chicken being in the same pot where I make all my delicious cruelty-free foods makes my tummy hurt. I know it can (and will) be cleaned, but like I said, the *IDEA* of it is nauseating.

Am I alone here?

lol

Are you guys okay with things like that?

Thanks for your opinions/experiences!

  1. It does not bother me a whit.

  2. I recently went camping with some friends, and I was asked to bring a pan.  I felt a little bit odd because I knew it would become some sort of animal graveyard come dinnertime. They cooked some sausages in my pan.  My friend cleaned the pan, and then I cleaned it once more when I got home but I haven't used that pan since we've gotten back.  I think it's time to get rid of it.  Perhaps subconsciously, I haven't used it because I know it's been used for pig guts.

  3. I'm not vegan so I'm not sure how I would feel.  I can think about something really gross being in my dishes and it would weird me out too.

Just a thought for the crockpot though.  You can get the liners for it.  I use them anyway because clean up is easier.  They're with ziploc items in the grocery.

  4. I'm not a vegan, or a vegetarian (but hopefully will be making that change soon) and I could imagine being grossed out by it, if I took offence to meat (I don't, I'm going to be doing it for health reasons)

I don't see why you would be alone in it. You don't like meat, whether it be for moral reasons or health reasons - and you shouldnt have people cooking meat in your pans or eating it from your plates if you don't want to.

  5. I have been veggie all my life and now a vegan.

At university, when i had to share the kitchen, I had my own plates that I would use and clean and than put away. If another meat eating student used my plates, and not wash them, it did upset me, cause I do not eat dead animals.

Anyway, now as an adult, I am married to a meat eater. But we have not meat in the house. I cook all the meals and I only cook veg*n meals. so I do not have to deal with meat foods on my dishes.

The only time ther eis meat in te house is to feed my two rescued dogs and two rescued cats. - but their dishes get washed often and its their dishes.

As an adult the hardest time is around Thanks giving andChristmas, I hate how everyone is celebrating and so happy, - when there is dead innocent bird on the table. - Like I see people saying prays and I wonder how can you ask God for for peace when you are so selfish in eating a bird/pig/cow that you gave no peace to. - that is the heardest for me.

  6. I totally get you.

I am the same way b/c i feel like bacteria or something else might stick to the pan and be left behind...but I try not to be dramatic about it. As long as the dish is cleaned properly, there really shouldn't be an issue with anything left behind. Just make sure she uses a NEW sponge to wash your pan if she hand washes it because if she uses a sponge that she has used to clean dishes that had meat on them, there could be some serious bacteria on it! EW!

Just be careful and you can wash it again if you feel the urge...lol. I do it sometimes....just b/c it makes me feel better.

  7. i've never had an issue with it, but our dishwasher has a "sanitize" setting and let's just say i use that frequently, lol.

plus, i had my dishes before i went veg, so i'd have to get all new kitchenware if it was an issue.....wait.....that could be a FAB idea.....new kitchenware?! hooray!

in all seriousness though, thank goodness for the "sanitize" setting on my dishwasher.

EDIT: exsft- that is amazing that your restaurant goes to that extent to separate veg food and meat foods.  good for you!

  8. Nah. I totally get that. I don't want tourture in my pots, under my knives, on my plate, etc.

I'm married to an omni, and you'd think I really kept kosher. everything is color coded for plants, dairy and (eww) flesh.

  9. Never been a problem for me.

So long as I am not funding abuse buy paying for, using or promoting abuse then I have no objections. Though I do admit it is a bit weird. I'm trying to ask myself, Would I use a knife to eat, if I knew that same knife had killed an animal?

    Good point acctually. ;)

    star of interest from me.

  10. uuummm well my mom isnt a vegetarian we just make seperate meals but she respects my wishes and I have encouraged us to eat better by shopping exclusivly at like whole foods and health markets filling up the fridge with mostly good stuff but we dont cook in the same pan after each other though but i dont have areserved pans except things like a wok that makes my stir frys..........

  11. No, we do not have any non-veggie products in our house.

We've never seen this as a problem to be honest, all our friends know we're veggies, they wouldn't put us in that position.

  12. the idea of several things could also be "nauseating" for you at this rate. Think about it, you are surrounded by people who eat meat, you are surrounded by people who prepare meat, you are surrounded by others who are ignorant towards your beliefs. You could also be grossed out by merely thinking about many other "cruel" thoughts and such. Be a little flexible though, lend the pot to your mother. Be assisting.

  13. Hmmm... that brings up a whole lot of other items that may have touched animal flesh, much more personal than a metal pan. Would you refuse to kiss someone who isn't a vegan, knowing their lips have touched many more animal products than your pan? Or even hold someone's hand who has prepared animal flesh for cooking?  If that doesn't bother you than the pan shouldn't - both will have been washed!

Unfortunately, dead animals (like humans) are biological... they're everywhere. How about getting into a car that once ran over a squirrel or raccoon? Or shaking hands with someone that hunts or fishes?

I think the best thing you can do is to reassure yourself by knowing that you yourself have not taken part in any of the actual killing of an animal. Remember, in your mind their acts are "cruel" but it's not like these people are beating children or purposefully torturing animals! Those are the ones you should be nauseated by...

    Good luck :-)

ps - full disclosure, I am "mostly" vegan

  14. For most dishes or cookware, I would not care.  The crock of a crockpot is not going to absorb anything that can't be washed off.  However, I would not let anyone use my seasoned cast iron pans to cook animal foods since I'd have to scrub them down and reseason them afterwards.

  15. warm shredded chicken sandwiches is food of the Gods

    Gods i say!

  16. I've never really thought about it, but we're new to being veg, so all my dishes and pans have already had meat products on them for years. That said, I don't think I would want meat on them again. Maybe you can give your friend an inexpensve crockpot as a birthday gift. :)

  17. Nothing that a little bleach won't cure..

But it's really a personal thing and if you are uncomfortable with it, then say so.. Your mom should understand (or she may not, but still)

By the way, we use different cooking equipment for vegetarian and omni foods in our restaurant precisely to avoid this issue. Pots and pans, plates and utensils are separated.work stations are also separate. The line cooks working on meats are never ever assigned to move to veggies, at least for that days service.

  18. I still live at home so I will have to be till I move out. I don't think I will do it once I move out. I feel the same way but I try to forget about it.

  19. No I am not in favor of that. You are not alone in your thinking!
