I have a photo project I need to do for my college sociology class. We need to pick something to take pictures of that are out in the world like a city different than our own. They need to be of anything that relates to sociology. Some examples that people already did were:

Different culture restaurants, air pollution, schools, religion(churches), houses

I was going to do domestic abuse clinics but there are not enough different ones around here. If anyone has any ideas that would be very helpful. I need to beable to take 8-10 different pictures.

Thanks.

  1. -different modes of transportation (bike, economy car, bus, luxury car, cab, mass transit, limo, etc..)

-different stores (from expensive (like Nordstroms) to thrift shops)

  2. Good luck with your project; it sounds very interesting.

How about alleys?  I did a photo essay on alleys in my downtown area decades ago that turned out pretty well.  It's premise was that downtown was the heart of the city; the main thoroughfares were the arteries, and the alleys were the veins.

It showed the perspective of a social environment that most people never see.

Our downtown area (as with most cities) had their storefronts refurbished numerous times over the years, but the alleys remained virturally untouched since the early 1900's, and it was like walking back into time.  Most of them were still paved with brick.

The one-point perspective of the shots, the brick, the narrow alley ways, the loading docks that were obviously original to the buildings, the delivery men everywhere, workers from the restaurants taking a smoke break, and the occasional homeless person, made it pretty interesting.

It was a world of it's own because those are the only folks you ever see in them.  When was the last time you were in an alley?  Most of us totally ignore them.

  3. No offence but it sounds more like a school project than a college sociology project.

  4. It's an interesting idea except for the fact that most of the people at those clinics will NOT want or allow you to photograph them - often for safety reasons!

How bout taking pics of people on the bus? Transportation, poverty, etc.

  5. How about transportation modes, or the various ways in which humans utilize/access energy?  Another possibility might include various forms of entertainment (sports, movies, video games, reading, etc.).

  6. Well, someone did restaurants... just pick something that you know there are a lot of, like, I don't know... movie theatres, homeless shelters. Maybe something to do with transportation? Buses, cars, taxis... just think of something that's common in your area.
