  1. it would be wise to mix a complex carb(powder) say Pro-Lab!!! with the whey protein mix,  add a Banana, 2 hours before the race, also Hydrate slow swigs of any name brand Drink with Potassium until 1/2 hr' before race, after race do the same, also mornings before your workout make sure to add the carb with the whey mix, important for a runner to do so, good luck.

  2. It does no good.

Your better off carbo loading.  Carbs=sugars=energy.

Protein is best after a workout.  Protein=muscle building

You take carbs for energy but when you do long periods of aerobic exercise you burn muscle too.....you will need protein afterwards....protein also helps minimize cramps and sore muscles.

  3. First thing is that you should always eat before a morning race.  No breakfast means low blood sugar and a poor performance.  It's good to eat at least 2 hours before the event starts.

Now whether a whey protein shake is a good breakfast is another question.  I'm not familar with that but if you like it and it sits well in your stomach and contains 400 calories it's probably OK.  Personally, I eat a bagel or powerbar and a banana with some sports drink.  However, there are lot's of combinations that work.
