Okay we know what punta means but what about "cana"?

  1. Punta means POINT and Cana means CANE as in SUGAR CANE.. so it means Sugar Cane Point


  2. As mentioned before cana is cane.  Today cana is used for roofing, When you see the thatch roofs in the DR they are made from the  cana palm which is grown specifically for that purpose.

  3. Cana does not mean Cane, it sounds none of you above have been to the country areas of DR. Cana is a type of palm tree that grows in the country which leaves has been use for roofing houses, make hats and cover chairs (among other things) for centuries. Since the area of Punta Cana there was so many of such trees it was named after it, please check the link below and it will show you how it’s used as roof cover.

  4. anytime they are talking about punta cana it is the tip/point of an island so to speak. There is also a Punta Cana in Cancún, Mexico. It's the tip/point of the island or landmass.  

  5. "Cana" is derivated from "Caña" witch means sugar cane, long time ago this was named like this for the many sugar cane fields in the region.

  6. You're referring to "Punta Cana" in the Dominican Republic, correct? It's the easternmost tip of the island of the Dominican Republic.
