  1. This is no where near original, but my son's birthday party was at his day care amongst the people he spends his day with.  I bought all of the supplies when I dropped him off that morning, I left work early and picked up the cake.  The kids really enjoyed themselves and he was extremely happy after wards.  This is also a really cheap way to throw a birthday party when your on a budget.

  2. In a recent birthday party that I was invited to, they had put up a big screen tv and played a musical snapshow made from digital pictures of their child's first year. The snapshow was professionally made and was beautifully choreographed to music. They had got it done from http://www.smilingsnaps.com It was so touching- I had never seen anything like that before!! I am planning to do something similar for my kid's upcoming birthday. Hope this helps.

  3. Hmmm...we had our son's 1st b-day at a park--I know that isn't original, but there isn't a whole lot they can do at this age.

My nieces 1st b-day was at the Children's Museum here...she couldn't do a whole lot, but the other kids that came could.

  4. Something light and low key, this is going to be way more exciting for you than it will the baby. 1 y/o are easy to overstimulate, which leads to a bad mood.  I had my WHOLE family out for my 4y/o's first b day, all the hustle and bustle had him terrible cranky, he missed most of his own party.

  5. I don't really have any different ideas for themes, etc, but for my daughter I tried to show the friends/relatives what they missed over the year, since we live a ways away.  I had her "going home" outfit, a newborn diaper, and her little receiving blanket next to a current outfit, her current diaper, and her current blanket to show how much she's changed.  I had a wall of pictures, in chronological order, that showed her first year.  I had a video of when she was born (we didn't tape the actual birth!) and then thru the year playing if people wanted to watch.  Then I took a picture of every person/family at the party, and afterwards took pictures of my daughter with each gift.  Instead of thank-you notes, I went to walmart.com and made little "Memory Books", where each page had the person/family on the left and my daugther playing with their gift on the right.
