The tear film coating the eye has three distinct layers, so that residue is a combination of the oils secreted by the meibomian glands from the lipid layer, water and other substances such as tear lipocalin, lactoferrin and lysozyme from the lacrimal gland in the aqueous layer, and mucin secreted by the conjunctival goblet cells in the mucous layer.

I just call it crud, myself.

It's called mucoid discharge but, I often call it eye gunk. If it is thicker than normal it may be an indication of an eye infection or an allergy. Hope this answers your question "Mr. Blue Eyes."
