Oklahoma City Thunder's Russell Westbrook and Boston Celtics' Paul Pierce named Players of the Week
Russell Westbrook and Paul Pierce have been named NBA’s Players of the Week for the games they played from 28 February, through 6 March, 2011.
Pierce, the Boston Celtics’ captain, received the honours of the best Player of the Week for the Eastern Conference of the NBA. He received this award the second time this season with the first being awarded back on 20 December, 2010.
The Boston Celtics’ captain, in his interim captainship, took the Celtics to a 4-0 record this week that included the following: They clinched a 107-102 victory against the Utah Jazz on 28 February, a 115-103 win over the Phoenix Suns on 2 March, a 107-103 victory against the Golden State Warriors on 4 March and an 89-83 victory against the Milwaukee Bucks on 6 March.
In Celtics matchup with the Suns, the player posted a double-double by scoring 16 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. He scored 27 points against the Warriors along with seven rebounds helping his team cruise past the Golden State. The Bucks saw the C’s captain tallying 23 points and grabbing five rebounds to go with four dimes in Sunday’s win.
Rajon Rondo also received the Player of the Week award this season; the 33-year-old Pierce brought the honour to the team for the third time this season.
The player made an average of 21.8 points and 8.0 rebounds in the week on a .587 shooting.
On the other side of the league in the Western Conference, Westbrook was named Player of the Week for the games he played in the same week. The player has been honoured with the title for the fifth time this season.
The 22-year-old helped the OKC record a 3-0 win/loss record in the games played from 2nd March through to 6th March. Oklahoma clinched a fastidious 113-89 win over Indiana Pacers at the start of the week.
The player notched 21 points and was just one assist shy of a double-double. He recorded a 7-for-11 overall shooting in 27-plus minutes. The next assault the OKC put up was against the Atlanta Hawks, on 4th March that resulted in their 111-104 win. The point guard scooped 28 points and was again left one shy of a double-double on his nine assists. Four of his assists that came in the game were given on 3-pointers and others were also taken out on crucial shots.
After registering two 20 plus games, the player pinned 32 points and pulled out 11 dimes for his team mates in 40 plus minutes in an overtime win over the Phoenix Suns.
He made an average of 27 points, 9.7 assists and three steals in the week of success.
Other players who were also nominated for the same title were Ray Allen (Boston Celtics), Zach Randolph (Memphis Grizzlies), Brook Lopez and Kris Humphries (New Jersey Nets), Dwight Howard (Orlando Magic) and Al Jefferson (Utah Jazz).
