Oklahoma City Thunder agree deal in principle to extend coach Scott Brooks’ stay – NBA Update
The Oklahoma City Thunder have reached a point of agreement with head coach Scott Brooks to extend his contract, which is set to expire soon. The two sides had been locked in discussions for a while but they took a back seat because of Oklahoma City amazing
run in the post season.
The NBA’s official website reported on the development.
“After months of discussions that went down to the wire, the Oklahoma City Thunder and coach Scott Brooks have reached basic agreement on the numbers of a new four-year contract in excess of $4 million annually, and were working out contract language
Saturday night with the hopes of getting the deal done on Sunday, when Brooks’ current deal expires, according to a league source.”
The reported 4 year deal would seem a just reward for Brooks who has achieved a lot with his young team in the last two seasons. The Oklahoma City Thunder reached the Western Conference Finals in the 2010 – 2011 NBA season and followed that up with an appearance
in the NBA Finals in the 2011 – 2012 season.
The Thunder lost to the Miami Heat in the Finals but the last two years have been the most successful in a long time from the franchise which moved from Seattle. Brooks has been largely credited for the Thunder’s good fortune.
He has shown a lot of maturity on the job, despite it being his first head coaching assignment in the NBA. Brooks has overseen the development of super star three time NBA scoring champion Kevin Durant as well as that of live wire point guard Russell Westbrook.
His rapport with the two stars and his ability to motivate a young team that also includes the likes of Serge Ibaka and James Harden has been viewed with envy around the NBA.
Scott Brooks made some key decisions in the last two post seasons for Oklahoma City Thunder. He gave additional responsibility to Kevin Durant in the clutch who responded magnificently and his handling of Russell Westbrook, who had earned the reputation
of a problem child, has been nothing less than exemplary.
With Brooks, Durant and Westbrook all tied to the franchise now for years to come, the future looks very bright indeed for OKC.
