Brooks steered OKC into the NBA finals this season, unarguably the most successful season in franchise’s history which is just 4 years old. An extension in coach Brooks’ contract seemed to a foregone conclusion when the season
ended, however it was learnt that Thunder’s GM Sam Presti and Brooks' agent, Warren LeGarie had not been unable to find a common ground.
According to ESPN, the franchise offered Scott with a 3 year extension worth of $12 million before this season, but has eventually agreed to a $16 million contract for four years.
Brooks has been coaching Thunder for the last 3 years and his previous contract will expire On June 30. In this season, he has been credited to carve out a championship calibre team from a group of extremely talented youngsters.
In the last two years, Kevin Durant, James Harden and Russell Westbrook have emerged as one of the best troikas in the league and nearly pulled off their first championship.
They finished the regular season with a 47-19 record and heading into the post season surprised everyone with their performance. On their way to the finals, the Thunder took down the defending champions Dallas Mavericks, the mighty
Los Angeles Lakers and the seemingly unbeatable San Antonio Spurs, three teams who have ruled the NBA in the last decade.
Then entered the NBA Finals as the favourites, but then LeBron James happened. The Miami Heat superstar used all of his experience and skills to outsmart the Thunder every time they stepped out on the court and Miami won the series
in five games.
Brooks however still impressed all with his coaching calibre and a good extension is only befitting.
