1. You want ALL of that in a single post?!

Table reservations? Good luck. Reserving a table is going to be *very* difficult at this point if you are looking for this year. If you are a small group, go walk around and join someone's table. There are plenty of people around who have no reservations, but go early to secure yourselves seating places. They mostly open at 11 am each day. There are people there at 10.30am occupying tables... Evenings are more fun, but busier too.

Below are a small selection of sites you may want to start off on, but you have to move quickly on reservations for hostels and hotels (no joke).

You may want to consider outside of the city for accommodation, like in Dachau or Freising and travel in if you can't find anything immediately. (20/40 min S-bahn ride)

Recommending a place to eat and visit? That's a whole industry in itself!

Contrary to what the above poster said, there are kids who attend Oktoberfest, but I imagine they would get bored quite easily. The amusement park at the site can only entertain up to a certain extent before moms & pops get totally trashed... keep an eye on kids - there are thousands there every day.

It's a *lot* of fun, just try not to over-do it!

  2. one thing for sure and i can vouch for this.... the oktoberfest is unique ! food you want, food you will have anywhere ! from snacks to ? whatever you preferences are. drinking should NOT be a problem at all, as the oktoberfest is the biggerst p**s up in the world. there is no need to book a table as everybody sits where they want to

sit ! try to sit on your ars*, it helps ! go and see for yourself, you'll love it. prosit !!!

  3. Oktoberfest is CROWDED. It is crowded to the point that it stops being fun. Seriously.

I would recommend going to the Canstatter Volksfest in Stuttgart instead. It is still huge, has plenty of beer fest tents, and has large fairgrounds with rides, etc., too.

Good luck making reservations in Muenchen. You have good shot in Stuttgart, though.

I live in Germany and most of people you ask will tell you the Canstatter Volksfest is better. It's located in Bad Canstatt just outside of Stuttgart.

  4. OCT Fest in München it is really big and nice just go over there and will have so much fun, but do not take kids with you !!!!!!

  5. Oktoberfest like any other big amusement places are nice and loud and full with drunk people - and the worst of all - a real rip off if you ask me. Prices here are simply far too high for food and drinks and all that.

I live in Stuttgart and we have the second biggest fest after the Oktoberfest called Cannstatter Volksfest. Don't ask me when I last had been there to spoil my money - think it must have been more than 5 or 6 years ago.

I don't want to tell you to stay away from it but you should know what you can expect there.

    Very important:

And keep your money hidden as there are many thieves around coming there especially for such events.

  6. Reserving tables will be VERY hard if not impossible. Usually people and companies reserve their tables at least 1 if not 2 year in advance.

As for hotels, you might want to book the room real soon. Prices are always higher than usual around that time of the year. All of Munich is usually booked out, so you may want to hurry up.

There are thousands of hotels in Munich, so its hard to say which one you should stay at. Best thing to do is research it on the internet.

There is plenty of food at the oktoberfest, snacks as well as full course meals.

Since you will be going to the Oktoberfest on the weekend, I would suggest that you show up real early if you want to get into the beer tents. They will close them down if they are too packed (which can happen as early as 10am on the weekend, especially the first weekend).

Don't bring any bags or purses with you. I suggest you bring only your money and always keep it somewhere close to your body instead of lose pant pockets.

If you only want to walk around and enjoy the rides, there is not much you could do wrong. Bringing a purse in that case wouldnt be a problem either, but still keep and eye on it especially if it's really crowded.

There is no entry fee to the fair, you have to pay for each ride that you may want to get on seperately.

It is definitaly a fun time. I hope you enjoy your stay in Munich.

  7. Oktoberfest is unique. It is very crowded and when we took our kids I was worried because it was wall to wall people. I did go there other times during the week and it wasn't as bad and left the kids at home. We were living in Munich at the time.

We also have been to the Fest mentioned in other posts in Stuttgart and it was great.

We also enjoyed several other Fests around the Munich area. Some small but they all have the big beer Tent. Great food and fun. We would get to talk with the locals and they were always so nice to us.

  8. don't waste your time with it, it's overrated
