  1. Ok, so for your photojournalism classes they are going to want you to master film (35mm) photography first.

Search around for different SLRs. Check out local camera stores and online. Film cameras are much cheaper than digital dSLRs, so your in luck. Research ALL the brands before you purchase, so you can really find what you want (Canon, Nikon, Pentax, etc.)

Be careful of used cameras, remember that ware comes with age. Eventually shutters need to be replaced, internal parts can be broken. Don't let this stop you from buying used, though. (Just beware!)

f/stops refers to aperture, the amount of light the lens allows through to the sensor. Aperture and shutter speeds can be controlled with the kind of camera you will be purchasing. Dark room procedure is actually developing the photos yourself directly from the film you shoot. You will learn more about this later.

Ask your professor for recommendations. Good luck! :)

  2. Ha. I don't find you intimidating at all. Come back to me once you can spell.

  3. OK Listen here Little Miss!

Get a 35mm canon or nikon slr film camera on craigslist or ebay.

Remember that you are also buying into a lens system not just a camera. A good all purpose lens would include a zoom in the range of 200mm.

  4. Pentax make a great manual and auto exposure SLR which you can find for under $100 at pawn brokers or on e-bay. I wouldn't get anything more than that except maybe a fixed 50mm lens.  Good luck - the best photojournalists in the world still use film, that's the difference between photojournalism and paparazzi - paparazzi can download their image and get it to their editor in under a minute from just about anywhere in the world. A photojournalist doesn't delete on the run. Stephen Dupont is a prime example.

  5. Buy a Pentax K1000 with a 50mm f1.7 lens and the Owner's Manual.

    Here are some trusted sellers:

    http://www.adorama.com

    http://www.bhphotovideo.com

    http://www.ritzcamera

    http://www.beachcamera.com

    http://www.uniquecamera.com

All of the listed sellers will give a detailed description of the condition of the camera and lens and have excellent return policies.

This book will also be very helpful: "Object & Image: An Introduction To Photography, Third Edition" by George M. Craven.

  6. Canon T2, find one on Craigslist. I have one and it is fantastic. Bought it for $100 with the stock lens.

    ~cheers.

  7. Find a good Nikon or Canon 35 mm SLR with lens for under $200 on craigslist in a city near you.

  8. My favorite non-digital 35mm camera is the Nikon FM.

    Others that are good:

Canon AE-1 (auto-exposure, but with full manual over ride)

    Olympus OM-1

For the best deals, Craigslist is good. If you shop on ebay, be sure to buy from a reputable dealer, someone who has lots of good feedback and has been doing it for awhile.
