Olazabal: Recent wins have lifted Europe's spirit
Jose Maria Olazabal has come out and said that the recent wins by the Europe’s Ryder Cup players have lifted the team’s spirit immensely and it is in good momentum going in to the tournament.
"The most important thing is momentum in the Ryder Cup," said the Spaniard.
The momentum is surely on the European side, especially with the recent victories of Rory McIlroy, Sergio Garcia, and Paul Lawrie.
The world number one Rory McIlroy has been in the form of his life lately. His victory by a staggering eight shots at Kiawah Island to land his second major, the PGA Championship and then two back to back victories in the playoffs, have really set things
up nicely for him.
Sergio Garcia was out of form - he missed the cut at the PGA Championship as well. In order to return to form, he changed his schedule a little and went to Wyndham. There, he secured a victory and a place in the Ryder Cup team.
"It says a lot about Sergio," said Olazabal of his fellow countryman, who missed the biennial team event in 2010 because of poor form.
"He wanted to be part of the team and he made the extra effort. Him making the team made it a lot easier for me," the Spaniard added.
Even those players who were out of form have hit their stride at the right time. Although Martin Kaymer of Germany and Nicolas Colsaerts of Belgium did not win at the Italian Open, but both of them shot some low rounds and were back in their groove.
Nicolas Colsaerts will be a key player for Europe at Medinah, as the he hits long and the course suits long hitters.
"It's a long course, a hitter’s course, and Nicolas hits it forever," explained Europe's captain. "I think his game is suited to Medinah".
Meanwhile, it has been a while since an American last won a tournament. Last victory by an American was at the WGC-Bridge Stone invitational, where Keegan Bradley triumphed.
Tour Championship is under way and much depends on it. Seventeen of the Ryder Cuppers this year are taking the field at East Lake, including the entire USA team. So let us see how things shape up.
