Olazabal surprised at Hunter Mahan's exclusion
In a strange move by the European Ryder Cup Captain, Jose Maria Olazabal has come out and expressed his concern over Hunter Mahan’s exclusion from the US Ryder Cup team.
Hunter Mahan who has won twice on the PGA Tour this season was not picked by Davis Love III.
Davis has gone for form and Mahan was not in the best of forms lately, his two wins came at the start of the season but since then it has been a struggle for him.
Snedeker was chosen instead of him and his selection is pretty understandable. Brandt Snedeker has been in hot form lately. His performance at The Barclays and the British Open are to name a few.
“Snedeker has pretty much been playing well from the start of the summer and all the way to the FedEx Series. However, Mahan has not been playing all that well, so [Love] went for form and in that regard he has my respect," said the veteran, Olazabal.
Another plus point for Snedeker was that his putting has been absolutely magnificent throughout and Love has chosen those players who are having a good time on the greens.
Olazabal, however, knows that the US Ryder Cup team is pretty strong and in the end it does not really matter who is in the team and who is not because all the 12 players are world class.
“They are very solid picks,” Olazabal told the Associated Press on Wednesday. “All the American players from nine to 14 on the list were all very solid and Davis could have picked any four”.
These are strange moves from the Europeans as Americans so far have not questioned their selection. Martin Kaymer also came out in support of Mahan and seemed doubtful of Snedeker’s selection.
The Europeans are trying to be clever and may be they are playing some mind games with the American, as they look to put them under pressure.
It is interesting that both of them have questioned Snedeker’s selection. May be they are trying to rattle the nerves of the rookie before the main battle starts.
Ryder Cup will be taking place at Medinah Country Club from the 28th to the 30th of this month in Chicago.
