Question:

Old Guinea Pig Problem?

by  |  earlier

0 LIKES UnLike

My guinea pig is about 5 or 6,

And I am starting to be able to feel his bones.

He isn't eating quite as much, either.

His end is probably nearing, as he is at life expectancy.

I would like to make the most out of my time left with him,

How can I keep him alive as long as possible? Is this normal?

  1. Yep.....the piggie is getting old. its normal for him to eat much beacuse hes older. well to keep him alvive longer. keep him healthy. make sure the pig gets a lot of water and oranges or ledduce. Also he needs his sleep so put him some where, where its nice and peacful for him to sleep.BE gentle with him and give him a lot of care.

Good luck to you and your guinea pig

  2. You know, I realise the average age for a piggie is 5-7 years, but many piggies have lived well past this point. He could live to be 7 or 8!

If your piggie is losing weight, you need to find out WHY.

Yes, it could be age related weight loss, but it could also indicate illness. Guinea pigs are masters at hiding illness. They will hide it & act completely normal until they are too sick to hide it any longer. Thats when the owner usually says, "Gee, something's wrong!".

Knowing that weight loss is usually the very first symptom of illness in a piggie, I'd take your fella in for a checkup.

I'm glad you've had so many wonderful years with him and I'm sure he feels the same. :)

  3. 5 or 6 is not really that old. it sounds like he is sick and needs a vet. He likely has a treatable illness.

GPs can live up to 8 or 9 years.
