Old IR list, trade deadline rules stay in place as NFL, NFLPA differ on changes – NFL News
The National Football League (NFL) has confirmed that an agreement between the league office and the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) on the proposed changes in the rules for injured reserve players and trade deadline extension has not been reached and therefore
the existing rules will continue to be effective for an indentified period.
A spokesman to the NFL confirmed this but did not clarify if the NFLPA has altogether rejected the proposed changes in the rules or was it just a matter of delay in the talk process, which apparently appears to be a case.
NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said:
"There was no agreement on it with the union. The old rules apply."
Also, the spokesman did not say if the league office has dropped the proposal or there still remains a possibility for a dialogue between the two stakeholders in the future.
If the NFLPA has rejected the recommended changes altogether they can be re-presented with certain amendments for talks or can possibly be shun completely.
While there is no independent confirmation if the NFLPA has shown unwillingness to talk on the proposed changes, some sections of media have attempted to pinpoint that the NFLPA has rejected the proposal, which 32 NFL franchise owners had agreed in May this
year.
The new rules would have allowed teams to replace an injured player with fresh but temporary hiring for the period the player was out with the injury problem. Since new rules are not effective the teams will continue to keep the players on IR list and not
make any replacement on the roster.
Another change that had been recommended under the new rules was the extension of two weeks into NFL players’ trade deadline, from current Week 6 of the regular season to Week 8. The deadline will now continue to expire at the end of Week 6.
According to some reports, the NFL is not pleased with the continuation of the old rules, saying the new rules could have taken the professional league a step forward. It was nevertheless another example of differences in approaches that the two organisations
have towards development of the American professional football league.
