  1. Good evening!  Fantastic picture.  The picture in particular is from the 1949 Indianapolis 500

    Driver:  Bill Holland

    Sponsor:  Blue Crown Spark Plug

    Car #7

    Started 4th (inside - Row 2)

Car:  Deidt/Offenhauser (or "Offy" for short)

    Average Speed:  121.327

    Winners Purse:  $51,575.00

    Time of Race: 4:07:15.97

Margin of Victory: 3 minutes, 11 seconds

Holland took the lead on Lap 55, and led the rest.

(Back then, when the checkered flag came out, competitors were still allowed to run the full 200 laps.  Thus, even when the driver was in Victory Circle - back then, it was a fenced-in area called the "Bullpen" at the south end of pit lane - cars were still circling the track to complete their 200 laps.)

    Bill Holland:

    Born December 18, 1907

    Died May 19, 1984

    Was from North Carolina

Made 5 starts in the Indy 500 - winning his 3rd time out

Interesting - has one win and *3* 2nd place finishes, to go along with a 15th place in his 5th and final "500".

  2. Bill holland

  3. bill holland 1949 indy 500 winner.car was number 7.
