Question:

Old Lense and new camera

I have just ordered a NIkon D40X digital camera. I have an older Vivitar 70-300mm f4.2-f5.8Macro 1:4X N/AI-S lense. Can I use this lense on this camera? Are there adapters available if the footings are different? Will the digiatl camera understand what lense is on it?
