Question:

Old NYC bus fare coin...?

It's a brass-metal-type-thing coin with a shiny disk in the centre. Around the central disk it says, "NEW YORK CITY TRANSIT AUTHORITY" and on the flip side, it says, "GOOD FOR ONE FARE".

Could some collector out there tell me around how old it is, and the approximate value?

  1. try looking on E-Bay!

  2. It's just a subway token, and not even one of the older ones.  They were in use until pretty recently, when NY converted to metrocards.  They are all over the place - the MTA shop even makes them into earrings and cufflinks.  They are not old and not rare, so it is probably not even worth the fare it represents.

Here is a short illustrated history of the various tokens with years and values from the MTA web site: http://www.nycsubway.org/tech/tokens/ind...

It has pictures, so you can at least find out which one you have, and when it was issued.
