Hi! I just got hired at Old Navy... I had 2 hour training yesterday on the cash register and today they had me as the main one. I had to ask alot of questions. I mean ALOT. Do you think that it got on anyone's nerves? I mean, there were alot of things that happened that I didn't know how to handle. Can someone give me some advice?

  1. I have done register training for Old Navy employees before, and while 2 hours is enough to be trained, there should be 1-2 hours of "shadowing" after that, meaning, another employee should have been standing behind watching you -- your methods & how you talk to the customers - to offer suggestions and to answer your questions.

You are not expected to learn everything about the register on the first day, let alone in 2 hours and be left alone.  If they were sick of hearing you ask questions, they would have pulled you off the register or offered to have someone help you.

If you're on the register by yourself, don't be afraid to ask for help if you don't understand something.  For the sake of the customer, there should be another employee helping you until you are comfortable by yourself, so the customer doesnt have to wait for a manager to come over and help you (delay for customer).

Don't be afraid to express concern to your manager.  Suggest that you watch another cashier to learn their methods (watch their movements and flow - scanning, bagging, cashing out), and talking about the ONC.

Typically in my store we use the buddy system and have another associate watch the new employee and then offer suggestions to speed up the transaction and make sure they are pressing the right buttons.

Obviously the most important thing is handling the cash correctly.  Anything else can usually be fixed with a manager override.

Good luck... you will get the hang of it very SOON! :)
