Question:

Old Sheet Rack Peeled Off

I was scraping old oil paint off my kitchen wall and the paint started to peel off. I believe that besides the thick old paint, the outer part of the sheet rack peeled off too. After it peeled off the sheet rack looks like paper cardboard. I am not sure whether there should be something that I would need to put over the sheet rack before I paint. Or can I just paint over the cardboard looking sheet rack? My concern is that the wall is where my gas range and when I have the stove or oven on, it may catch fire. What should I do? Please advise. Thanks

  1. Put a light coat of taping compound over the missing paper. Sand it smooth then paint on a primer then a finish coat of paint

  2. You'll be OK.  You just need to make sure that you put a coat of primer over that area.  Once your primer has dried, you're good to paint again.  If it's got a bit of a 'hole' or groove in the sheet rock, just apply some drywall mud and smooth it out, then sand it and primer it and then paint the color you wish.  Hope that helps.
