Got this old horror movie on VHS, tape looks like it is in good shape but can't see picture, pure static and the audio I do pick up seems to have a sped up sound and squeal. Could this be a problem with the casing or something?

  1. It could be that it was originally recorded in a speed that is not compatible with your VCR.  Older model VCRs had 3 recording speed settings: SP, LP & EP in order to get 2hrs, 4hrs & 6hrs respectively from at T-120 tape.  Most current models only have the SP & EP modes so are unable to playback tapes that were recorded using the LP setting.  The newer model VCR usually attempts to playback in SP mode which results in a static picture with higher-speed playback of the sound.  You may wish to see if someone has an older VCR that you can try it on.
