Old White Course: The perfect place to play golf
Designed in 1914 by Charles Blair MacDonald, the Old White Course offers beauty along with challenges. The golf course is named after a hotel, Old White, which was based at this place from 1858 to 1922.
MacDonald was one of the most famous golf course designers of America.
However, the golf course was amended a little in 2010 to fit in the PGA Tour requirements. The course is one of the toughest courses around the world.
It has a total of 72 sand bunkers, which means there are four bunkers per hole, and there are ten water hazards.
The course has a par value of 70 and is ranked 13th in terms of difficulty on the PGA Tour.
Many legends have played on this golf course, including the likes of Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Lee Trevino and Tom Watson.
They have played and performed on the challenging and one of the toughest greens that could be made.
Sam Snead, who got his first professional job at this very golf course, shot his last hole-in-one on the 18th hole in 1995, at the Old White Golf Course.
President Woodrow Wilson is one of earliest players who played at the Old White course. The course itself features lush green fairways, along with undulating and challenging greens.
In 2010, the Old White Course hosted the Greenbrier Classic. Stuart Appleby emerged victorious back then.
The Greenbrier Classic has always attracted big names that are here mainly due to the challenge which this golf course poses and its history.
In 2011, the course was given the title of TPC, Tournaments Players Club. This is a very prestigious designation given only to one of the finest courses by the PGA.
Many legends have teed off on this course and many young golfers hope to play here one day. They aim to follow in the footsteps of their icons.
This time around, it would be another legend, Tiger Woods, who will be playing for the first time at the Greenbrier Classic. He will be hoping to make his mark on the historic Old White Course.
Stuart Appleby holds the record for the best score at the Old White TPC. He shot a 59 in the final round on his way to clinch the Greenbrier Classic title in 2010.
This year’s Greenbrier Classic will feature many top players, including the US Open champion Webb Simpson and Tiger Woods, who recently won at the AT&T National.
The Greenbrier golf history dates back to the times of Sam Snead and Jack Nicklaus. The Greenbrier is one of the most prestigious golf destinations, it has four world class courses and a golf academy.
Apart from the Old White Course, there is Greenbrier Course which was built in 1924. The course was further upgraded in 1977 by one of the legends of the game, Jack Nicklaus.
Meadows Course was previously known as the Lake Side Course and it was closed for many years, until it was redesigned by Robert Cupp in 1999.
The Snead Course was designed by Tom Fazio. It was made in the honour of late Sam Snead and in recognition of his services for the club and golf.
The history of the Greenbrier dates back to the history of American golf. Playing golf at the Greenbrier is not just a game, it is a heritage.
