6 months ago I ran out of gas and we still have that red container. However, there is about 3 ounces of gas left in there. I have read that this is dangerous. Where can I safely spill this out? Can I do it in NYC?

I live in Brooklyn NY and there are natural gas pipes under our houses. Not sure if it's specifically under my house, but I know that there's a pipe under my neighbor's sidewalk.

  1. Just dump the fuel into your tank.  If you're concerned about the fuel having gone bad, you're right to do so - it has a shelf life like so many other things, but 6 months isn't it.  Just dump it into your fuel tank shortly after a fill-up, so if there is anything slightly wrong with the leftover fuel, it'll be diluted throughout the rest of the tank and burn off with no problem.

At the end of the woodcutting season, I just run whatever leftover 2-cycle fuel through my truck's engine, and it's never so much as hiccuped in the 20 years I've been doing that.  So don't worry about that part.  No car of your own?  No sweat, give it to a friend.

As to dumping, you can't.  I don't know where you're coming from with the natural gas pipes - that's the fuel your furnaces and gas stoves runs on, and you can't go pouring liquid fuel into them in any case.  You shouldn't try to open those pipes for any reason.

  2. take 2 nearest gas station they will dispose it,

    at least they should!

  3. 3 ounces isnt enough to do anything but if your really worried about it dump it in a coffee can or other metal container and burn it off. DO NOT DUMP ON THE GROUND!!

  4. When I have some gas left over in a can I use it to kill the weeds that grow in the cracks of my driveway.  Three ounces isn't going to go into the ground.  It will soak in slightly and then evaporate.
