ok, so my bro, who is turning 30, thinks his life is going down the drain, and is talking about going to a university. I'm thinking to myself, "WTF, man, procrastinate much?" but anyway, i need some help in the processes he needs to go through to get in to college by either summer semester '09 or fall semester '09. So i need any information you guys can help me with. I mean ANY. he didn't even take his SAT's. :/

I may sound a little mean and upset, but this is my bro and i'm trying to help him out. thanks a lot ^_^

  1. okay, so, since he wants to go to uni, make sure he checks with whatever grants he can get, as well as whatever loans, find out from the registrar's office what kind of tests he's going to have to take, and, also, find out what he's going to be majoring in, and how he plans to live while going to uni... all this has to be taken into account, before just trying to jump into a new experience like that..

by the way, in 93, i was 41 and I went to college and got a degree, soooo, at 30, he's not too old... it's just that it seems old to you because you've not done it.  and, there are many others who've gone back later in life than either of us.. so, relax, be supportive, as you already seem to be, and get him going.

  2. there's nothing wrong old guys going to school, ACTUALLY...

but there is always wrong from anybody...

    THAT'S ALL!

  3. 30 is no longer considered old to go to college, many adults are returning now. In fact, some employers look more fondly upon adults who have gone back. They show maturity and determination, as opposed to the kids who hang out and drink in the dorms for four years.  They are making the adult decision to go to college and study rather than doing what their parents require. You could be much more supportive.

SATs are not important for him at this stage, he's not a high school student . He can contact the local state university or community college, obtain his high school transcripts (yes, they'll be on file) and apply. It is not too late to enroll at many state schools so he needs to act fast, but may still be admitted for fall. Many adult programs do not require as much classroom time and have night options.

Many state schools have online programs now, as well.

  4. If you go as a mature student then you don't always need formal qualifications but you might need to have an interview to prove you can take the course. Contact the universities he is thinking about and see their admissions policy for mature students. I didn't take my degree until I was 30 and I got a first class with honours so it's never too late to learn.

  5. Contact the Registrar's office at his school of choice.  They'll be able to tell you what's required.
