  1. He simply wasnt allergic to it before, and now he is.  Allergies are aquired with repeated exposure.  You dont want him touching or chewing or having anything at all to do with the plant its leaves or its sap.  That kind of dose on someone who is now allergic could send them into anaphalactic shock.

If you do apply any medicine to him, make sure you are wear latex gloves and dont get it anywhere on your body or clothes.

Basically, you need some benedryal, calamine lotion, an oat meal bath and kill all the poison ivy thats around.

  2. if you can find lye soap. this is the only old remedy I know.

we had homemade soap growing up I just saw some in a health food store though.

call around, the lye dries out the poison ivy rash and boils and makes it heal faster.

  3. i've heard about native americans chewing leaves of some species of wild fern and or using mud to draw out the poison as it dries and also relieve itching, also i wouldn't recommend eating poison ivy or inhaling it while burning, i know from experience if it gets in your blood stream its much much worse. take him to the dr and get a steroid shot and atarax or vistaril for the itching.  immediate relief

  4. I would not recommend anybody chewing poison ivy leaves? That sounds crazy. Maybe your dad was just naturally not allergic to poison ivy?

The rash that develops from touching poison ivy is an allergic reaction to the oils from the plant. Some people are not allergic... and have no reaction. Like me, never have had any reaction to poison ivy at all. But, some people are allergic.. like my sons. ALSO, people can develop allergies throughout their lives.. and your reaction to poison ivy can change from plant to plant and year to year.. I guess sometimes there are variations or something. Anyways, get some caladryl and hope it clears up.

The best way to prevent poison ivy is to keep your eyes looking for it and if you do come into contact with it, immediately wash your hands with soap and water.
