Question:

Old model Savage 24 barrel removal

I recently purchased an older model 24, the one with the barrel selector switch on the side of the receiver.

It came with no book and the Savage website offers no details.

How does the front stock come off to allow the barrels to be removed?

I'd appreciate any help from a fellow Model 24 owner.

If it helps, mine is an early model wood stock, 22LR over .410.

No serial numbers, and just a Model 24, no letter suffix.

Selector switch on right side of receiver, button type, not the lever type.

  1. Have a look here: www.savage24.com

savage questions on the home page and check out the parts and exploded drawings on the FAQ page.

  2. grab the tip of the forend and pull down away from the barrels. it has a spring lock that keeps it tight to the barrell. after this, when you break the rifle open, the barrels will come away from the receiver.

How about that dovetail scope mount machined into the 22 barrel?

  3. Start pumping iron and pull down on the forearm like you would on any other Dbl barrel shotgun.*I had the same one you have , but my stock was made out of plastic.*

  4. Have you tried pulling straight downward on the outermost end of the forearm piece.  It will be held in place by a leaf spring and will snap back into the installed configuration upon assembly.  Watch your fingers when you snap it back together.  The leaf spiring is attached to the wooden forearm by screws and snaps into a metal piece on the barrel.

just looked in my gun book the model 24 has the standard pull down fore stock, maybe yours is just siezed up a tad, .all of the 24 series in my book have the pull down front stock
