Old movie with a character named "Bubba"?

Question

I remember as a child in the 80's (maybe late 70's) seeing this movie on TV but can't remember the name. It was about a little girl who lived on a farm who became friends with a mentally challenged man (Bubba), who I believed worked on the farm. Something tragic happened to the girl & townsfolk thought Bubba did it (but he didn't) & they strung him up alive in the fields dressed as a scarecrow. These details my be a little mixed up but I do believe that's the jist. Anyone have any idea what I'm talking about?

It sounds kind of like the green mile, but that wasn't his name and he was sent to jail and executed. Though in green mile the character was mentally challenged and a tragedy did occur to two girls which he was blamed for.

There is Forest Gump. has forest who is mentally challanged and he makes friends with a farm girl (Jenny) and when Forest goes into the Millitary he makes friends with a guy named Bubba. You probebly Strung a bunch of movies together.
