  3. In addition to ice houses, people had 'pie safes' to keep bugs and other varmints away from food. Meat was often smoked, which made it last a little longer.   5. they did not have refrigerators in the 1700's, there was no electricity to run them.  they used "ice boxes" to keep things cool.
