  1. They'll often work with an appliance of the same brand, whether it's new or old.

Sony is good about that- I have a remote from the early 90s that works with my dvd player from just a few years ago and tv from the late 90s.

If you know someone who tinkers with electronic things, salvaging and such, they probably wouldn't mind salvaging some of the components inside.

And you don't have to worry about throwing them away.  Most everything in them is neutral to the environment, despite what some nutjobs will rant.  The only thing that has a chance of hurting te soil and such are the batteries and the electrolytic capacitors.  But most capacitors in those small devices are ceramic, and the ones that are electrolytic are still insignificantly small.  everything else inside is ceramic, plastic, metal, and silicon.

  2. we gave them ( and also an old vcr and an old monitor ) to the boys with tool kits, small hammers, screwdrivers, etc...and let them go to town

was going to toss the stuff anyway, they had a blast !

  3. throw em away?

  4. If you don't have the device they go to any more or the device is no good they should be recycled as electronics should never be thrown out as the components inside then are extremely toxic to the environment.
