I have a very very old oven with a two prong plug (110 volt?) I want to upgrade the oven and the newer ovens have the much larger 4 prong with plug with a much heavier cable. What needs to be done to be able to use this? Is there a converter that can be used?

p.s. I live in Canada

  1. The old wiring would not be heavy enough to safely carry the new oven's electrical load.

It's a fairly straightforward installation tho, and an electrician can take care of it in short order, probably in an hour or so.  He should install a new breaker, and run a new wire to the oven location.  Breaker will run less than $20, wire will be charged by the length, needed to run from the circuit panel to the stove.

If your home is old enough to have the old 'cloth wrapped' wiring, you should look at replacing all of it as soon as possible, and definitely do NOT add to the load on that type of wiring... its a fire hazard waiting to happen.  Even if you can only afford to have it done a little at a time, it needs to be done.

    Good Luck

  2. all you have to do is put in a new wire from your breaker box to the stove that's rated for the 220v no converter sorry
