  1. I've been reading maritime history for 40 years, and building wooden yachts for 30 so:

old timey ships were oak backbone and frames with either oak or cypress or teak planking; sailing yachts since WW2 are still oak keel and frames with mahogany, yellow pine, or white cedar planking.......

  2. The british Galleons were mainly made of Oak. I would think the spanish probably used Walnut .But nowadays you have to think what sort of boat do I want? Balsa for instance, is a very light wood, and could be used in some  cases. But I would check with wikipedia, as I'm not certain which woods are available in your part of the country. Many modern boats are either fibreglass or aluminum these days.

  3. what like the slave ships?? um,..i heard they broke down in the South primarily,...so i would say something cheap like oak

  4. I believe maghony.

  5. Oak is the wood of choice for the hull.

  6. Ha ha.. In speaking of pirate ships.. There is a sunken one in the back of the levee where i live..

  7. Pirate ships are made from oak mostly. boats on the other hand can be made of most any wood but woods like beech mahogany or teak are preferred
