Older Gelding without lower canines?

Question

I have a 9-12 year old Appy Gelding. The dentist stopped by yesterday - it turns out that my gelding has no longer canines - something the dentist has never seen before in a gelding. It doesn't affect his health, and I'm not worried about that

But has anyone seen or heard of this anomaly before? Care to help explain it to me?

I've never heard of it, but actually I didn't realize horses even had canines...Stupid me i guess.

Those canines are called wolf teeth in horses, and they are sometimes removed for health reasons, but otherwise, I can't understand why they would be missing.
