Question:

Older Magnavox TV suddenly has rolling horizontal lines of color?

It just started the other day. One minute, it works great, the next minute, the picture starts rolling with horizontal lines really fast. The sound is still great. At first, I thought it was my DVD player, so I bought a new one. Still the horizontal lines. Then, I bought new cables for my TV thinking maybe there was a connection problem in the cord...still no change. So, it must be the tv. It works great when I run the menu on the tv, except the image shakes a bit. But, to watch a video or dvd, it has those colorful horizontal lines that roll quickly down the screen. It is driving me nuts!! Is it something simple and cheap to fix, or should I just get a new tv?

  1. The reason why the menu is fine is because it is not the result of a transmitted and decoded signal. It is stored in memory on your TV.    A bit like bios is within your PC.

Your Magnavox TV has a problem with colour control and from my experience is typically caused by failed electrolytic capacitors in the colour circuits. While the parts to try to replace to fix it cost very little, you will face a fee for perhaps a Service Call,if it is a 52cm set or larger, and Workshop Labour on top of that.

The blithe response of the person who advises you to simply "Replace it " only serves to highlight the reason why so many TV technicians like me get very little work nowadays because of the  "Throw Away" mentality that has pervaded consumer society to the point where almost everything  that is no longer functioning is destined for the scrap heap!

Imagine if that applied to US when we become ill or incapacitated!!!
