Question:

Older cats and weight loss?

What cat food is good for older cats that are thin? My vet told me what to feed him, but all the foods that I've seen for senior cats are formulated with lower calories to keep seniors from getting fat! Kind of defeats my purpose of keeping him from getting too thin...

  1. our cat is 18 and skinny and almost daily pukes up her food. we try different brands after different brands. keep trying until you can find a brand that her stomach agrees with.

  2. I don't understand why you wouldn't follow your vets instructions? Ask at a pet store for good food for an older cat who needs to gain weight. Simple really.

  3. I have used Innova Evo (both dried and canned) with great success. It does not contain much in the way of carbohydrates and is very high in protein which is best for a cat. Many other brands contain high levels of carbs which are not good for a cat - they are not evolved to digest carbs.

There are other brands which (if you are in USA) you will have access to, such as Wellness and others. Do not use Science Diet or Iams - while they are sold by many vets and pet stores (and recommended by vets) they are not high quality foods.

As a cat gets older their digestive system does not work as efficiently which is why many lose weight. Even on a good food many will be thinner than when they were in their prime but a food that is easier to digest will certainly benefit them.

Edited to add: Introduce any new food slowly to allow their digestive system to adjust to it.

  4. Well my cat is 12 and is fat and Don't see a problem ... Tho my cats name is Garfield....lol

  5. canned cat food. I had a stray that was starving and ccanned cat food kept him hydrated and put weight on him fast
