I once saw a documentary on the oldest man to ever live in England. I believe he was documented to be around 134 years old. He was a farmer, out lived couple of wives and several of his children. I was said that he started out each day with a breakfast of oatmeal.

The King at that time, Charles II, wished to meet him. To which, the old man traveled to London to meet the King. The King was so impressed by his age that he laid on a great banquet for the old man.

It's said, that not being used to such rich foods, the old man died within a few days. The King had him buried in West Minster Abby.

Is this true or just one of those nice stories that makes for a 30 minute TV show?

  1. 17th century documentation can be shaky, especially if the parish record no longer exists, and 17th century reportage is shakier still.

111-year-old  Henry Allingham, born June 6, 1896, is currently the oldest living verified WWI veteran, and oldest documented living European man.

  2. The man's name was Thomas Parr. He is buried an Westminister Abbey as you say and his tombstone reads

"THO: PARR OF YE COUNTY OF SALLOP. BORNE

IN AD: l483. HE LIVED IN YE REIGNES OF TEN

    PRINCES VIZ: K.EDW.4. K.ED.5. K.RICH.3.

    K.HEN.7. K.HEN.8. K.EDW.6. Q.MA. Q.ELIZ.

    K.JA. & K.CHARLES. AGED l52 YEARES.

    & WAS BURYED HERE NOVEMB. l5. l635."
