Olga Govortsova beats Johanna Konta in round two – US Open 2012
World number 67, Olga Govortsova, defeated the 203rd ranked Briton qualifier, Johanna Konta, in an epic three-setter during the second round of the US Open in New York. The 24-year-old Belarusian lost the opening set
2-6 but bounced back to power down the 21-year-old newly turned Briton in the following two sets 6-2 and 7-5.
The Belarusian commenced the match in dramatic fashion; dropping the opening two serve games and allowing her opponent to built a monumental lead of 0-4. The trail was a bit too big for the superior ranked professional and she
decided to let the set run away with just two games under her belt. She didn’t want to invest energy and retain it for the following two battles.
Govortsova started the second set as well and it was a relatively good start from her; commenced with a serve hold and didn’t falter on the second occurrence as well that pushed the scores to 2-1. Moreover, the hard work from the
Belarusian was paid off with a breakthrough in the fourth game and a serve hold in the fifth game posted a resounding lead of 4-1.
Things looked a bit shaky for the breakthrough Briton qualifier who showed immense talent in the qualifying as well as the main round of the tournament. However, she witnessed herself losing the second set with just two games under
her belt but good thing for her was that she won a break point that disturbed the Belarusian a bit.
The worst was expected of Govortsova and she fell for the trap; dropped a couple of breakpoints in a row and that thumped her to a trail of 0-3. However, she recovered emphatically well to press her opponent down and win two breakthroughs
back in time. Both players broke each other’s serve once before the scores moved on to 5-5.
Konta couldn’t handle the pressure and dropped the 12th game of the set that proved to be the last action of the match. Govortsova will be going head-to-head with the sixth seed German star, Angelique Kerber, who trounced
the former world number one, Venus Williams, in round two.
