Olga Govortsova cripples Greta Arn in qualifiers – New Haven Open 2012
Qualifying fifth seed, Olga Govortsova from Belarus devastated the Hungarian challenger, Greta Arn, with a bagel at the New Haven Open at Yale 2012 on Friday. She nudged up a 6-2, 6-0 victory against the world number 123 to cruise into the second round of
the qualifying competition at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier event held in Connecticut, United States.
The Belarusian seed showed top notch performance to outfox Arn for the third straight time. The players last battled each other at the Wimbledon Championships five years ago and after earning this success in just under an hour, Govortsova advanced into the
second qualifying round at this Emirates Airline US Open Series event taking place from 17th to 25th August.
Govortsova made a strong entry at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center. She drew the first blood in the third game and jumped to a 3-1 lead. The Belarusian held her remaining serves with conviction and capitalised on another break chance in the seventh game,
eventually sealing the opener by winning six games to two.
Ranked 80th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Govortsova went out of control in the following set. She blasted powerful groundstrokes to reel off all six games, eventually pulling out the set with a bagel.
All in all, the 23-year-old took full advantage of seven double faults the Hungarian spilled. She clobbered a better first serve share of 64 per cent as compared to Arn’s 51 per cent and impressively marked 22 out of 27 points on it.
Next in line for Govortsova is the Ukrainian starlet, Olga Savchuk, who dumped Spain’s Estrella Cabeza Candela in straight sets to set up this date.
The qualifying top seed, Timea Babos, also stole the limelight later that day. She made an epic comeback from a set down to overpower Russia’s Alla Kudryavtseva in three sets to progress. The Hungarian seed lost her serve four times but cashed in five out
of 11 break chances to formulate a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 score line in two hours and 11 minutes.
Babos will next face Uzbekistan’s Akgul Amanmuradova who battled past the Brazilian contender, Teliana Pereira, in a three-set thriller to advance.
