Olga Govortsova cripples Pauline Parmentier to reach main draw – Internazionali BNL D’Italia 2012
Belarusian starlet, Olga Govortsova, devastated the qualifying sixth seed, Pauline Parmentier, with a breadstick at the Internazionali BNL D’Italia 2012 on Sunday. She jolted down a 6-2, 6-1 victory against the 26-year-old French to cruise into the main
draw at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Mandatory event taking place in Rome, Italy.
The 11th seeded qualifier, Govortsova, showed brilliant abilities to outrun Parmentier in one hour in their second encounter. Facing each other after five years, the Belarusian not only avenged her loss at the Tashkent WTA event against the world
number 65 but also entered the main draw at this red clay court event.
Govortsova high-spiritedly entered the opening set and held her first serve to take the initial lead. After Parmentier kept her serve in the fourth game, the Belarusian unleashed her true colours and stroke out the last four games in a row. She was never
threatened with any breakpoint and capitalised on two out of three break chances to inch closer towards the fame.
Ranked 75th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Govortsova went on a five-game killing spree before their rival’s could hold on. She then held her serve once more and pulled out the set with a breadstick. The Belarusian warded off the lone breakpoint
she faced and cashed in both break chances to dominate.
All in all, the Belarusian produced a better first serve share of 72 per cent as compared to her opponent’s 60 per cent and amazingly clicked 28 out of 36 points on it.
Up next for Govortsova is the Czech star, Petra Cetkovska, in the opening round.
The Spanish contender, Silvia Soler-Espinosa, ousted the Ukrainian star, Lesia Tsurenko, in straight sets in almost two hours.
She amazingly dusted away three out of 12 breakpoints she faced and cashed in six out of 16 break chances to formulate a 6-3, 6-3 success. She produced a slightly lower first serve share of 54 per cent as compared to her rival’s 55 per cent and impressively
clicked 26 out of 43 points on it.
Soler-Espinosa will next face the local wild card entrant, Alberta Brianti.
