Olga Govortsova dismisses Yung-Jan Chan in 1st round – HP Japan Open 2011
Belarusian Olga Govortsova survived a mid match fall of 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 against the Taiwanese Yung-Jan Chan in the opening round of the HP Japan Open 2011. The players contested for one hour and fifty five minutes on outdoor hard
courts of the Utsubo Tennis Center in Osaka, Japan. Finally emerging victorious was the Belarusian on Tuesday the 11th of October 2011.
Chan decided to go first and initiate the opening round but she was unable to do so, as she was unable to bag her first service game. While, Govortsova was quick to capitalize on the early break and by holding her serve, she placed
herself on the scoreboard at 2-0.
The Belarusian repeated the feat and had further increased the lead to 4-0 by the end of the fourth game. In the following two games the players held serve at the scoreboard had moved to 5-1 with Govortsova leading. As Chan double
faulted on her second serve she endorsed the set point to her adversary, who was now one up in the match.
Opening the second round of the match was Govortsova, who not only held her serve in the first game but also broke her adversary to take a mini lead of 2-0. Chan was not going to throw away the match without a fight and she broke
back immediately in the next game and as she held serve the score was tied at 2-2 by the end of the fourth game. Chan had taken a notch higher in her performance and repeated the feat twice to seal a 6-2 victory of the second set.
By the end of the two sets the players each had bagged a set apiece and opening the decisive round of the match was Belarusian Govortsova. Both the players broke each other one after the other and wanted to bag the third set while
neither wanted the other to take the lead. In the following two games the players again held serve and the scoreboard tied at 2-2.
The players kept matching a blow for a blow and the toe-to-toe run carried well into the third set. The challengers again broke each other continuously for the following four games and the scoreboard again had balanced at 4-4 by
the end of the eighth game.
However, after that the match saw a turn of events as Govortsova held serve in the eleventh game, the crowds expected the set to move into a tiebreaker but instead as Chan served, she double faulted and gave away the match to her
adversary.
The Belarusian expertly managed to reserve a spot in the second round of the match where she will be facing third seeded German Angelique Kerber.
