Olga Govortsova edges past Laura Pous-Tio into the last eight – Barcelona Ladies Open 2012
Belarusian tennis ace, Olga Govortsova, tamed past her way into the quarter-finals of the Barcelona Ladies Open On Thursday. She defeated the 114th ranked Spanish, Laura Pous-Tio, in three sets 7-6(4), 6(6)-7, 6-2.
Both players started off with a serve hold before trading six breakpoints on the trot to push the scores at 5-4. Tio was the one who was serving the most crucial game of the set; she did well to hold her serve and turn the pressure
back on her opponent. Govortsova also struggled a bit but in the end enforced a tie-breaker round to decide the set. With nothing at all between the two player, the Belarusian won the set courtesy to a single mini-break.
Nothing changed in the second set as well and both players kept on slaughtering each other on their return game but failed to capitalize on serve holds. There were no serve holds in the first five games but then suddenly the trend
changed; both players held their respective serves in the following four games to push the scores at 5-4.
The Belarusian tennis ace was serving for the match but she was stopped in the middle courtesy to a classic display of strength and guile from her opponent.
A breakthrough at that time levelled the scores at 5-5 and furthermore enforced another tie-breaker round after a serve hold at both ends. This time it was the local player who was lucky. Tio won the set and enhanced her chances
of qualifying for the last eight.
The final set witnessed another cracking battle between the two players. Scores stayed together at the start but suddenly a flurry of breakpoints for the Belarusian took away the game from her rival. She won three back-to-back
breakpoints and lost just one serve game towards the ending stages of the match to clinch the victory.
Total points played in the match were 250 and the difference of just 10 points separated the winner from the loser; Tio won 130 compared to 120 of Govortsova. The Belarusian coughed 14 double faults and her opponent spilled out
four of them in the match. However, the visitor smashed four aces compared to just one of her rival. In the end just two breakpoints did the trick for the Belarusian, as her opponent had won seven compared to her nine. There was absolutely nothing between
them throughout the match.
Govortsova locks horns with the Romanian beauty starlet, Sorana Cirstea, in the next round.
