Olga Govortsova through to quarterfinals of Monterrey Open 2011
Olga Govortsova of Belarus defeated Russian Alla Kudryavtseva in three sets to enter the quarterfinals of the Whirlpool Monterrey Open 2011 on Wednesday.
Govortsova won her second round match against the Russian 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 in just over two hours.
The Belarusian had a good start to the match as she won the opening set 6-3. She hit two aces and 48 per cent of the first serves in the first set. On the other hand, her opponent could not a hit a single ace in the opening set. The Belarusian saved two
of the three break points she faced. In comparison, Kudryavtseva could not save any of the break points she faced.
Kudryavtseva staged a comeback in the match with a 6-4 win in the second set. Both players broke each other’s serve on a number of occasions. The Russian hit 57 per cent of the first serves compared to 63 per cent by her opponent.
Govortsova’s serve did not help her in the second set as she hit four double faults.
After losing the second set, Govortsova looked completely different in the decider and thrashed her opponent 6-0 to win the match. The Belarusian changed her style of play and played more aggressively in the final set. She attacked her opponent’s backhand
and came to the net often.
In the opening round, the Belarusian comfortably beat Renata Voracova of Czech Republic 6-3, 6-1.
She will face the eighth seeded, Polona Hercog of Slovakia in the quarterfinals, who defeated Barbora Zahlavova Strycova of Czech Republic in the second round to reach the last eight.
Govortsova turned pro in 2002. She is currently ranked world number 85 in the Women’s Tennis Association singles rankings list. The Belarusian lost to Anna Chakvetadze in the first round at the Australian Open 2011. However, she managed to qualify for the
second round at the Moorilla Hobart International, where she lost to Chinese Shuai Peng in three sets.
