Olga Savchuk outplays Daria Gavrilova to reach the semis – Siberia Cup 2011
Top seed Olga Savchuk swallowed past eighth seeded Russian, Daria Gavrilova, with a breadstick at the Tyumen ITF event, held on the indoor hard courts in Tyumen, Russia. The Ukrainian registered a 6-2, 6-1 victory at this
US $50,000 event and advanced into the last four on Wednesday.
Ranked 195th in the Sony Ericsson WTA Premier Rankings, Savchuk displayed top notch performance to destroy a local wild card entrant, rank 143 spots below her, in their first encounter. She is eyeing
for her maiden year-to-date title after booking a semi-final place at the Siberia Cup.
A former world number 79, Savchuk hammered angled shots and convincingly levelled the scores at 2-2. After this, she went into rage mode and wiped out the last four games consecutively, sealing the set with a 6-2 win. She
blocked all breakpoints she came across and capitalised on two out of three breaks of serves.
The 24-year-old Ukrainian kept momentum rolling into the final set and comfortably held her serve in the opening game. After the Russian seed held her serve in the second game, Savchuk unleashed flurry of ground strokes to
go on a five games rampage and earned a breadstick. She faced no hindrance or any breakpoint and converted both break chances to her advantage.
Savchuk will square off against the third seed, Yulia Putintseva, who drilled through sixth seeded Ukrainian, Veronika Kapshay, with double breadsticks to set-up this meeting. The local seed barely sweated to formulate a
6-1, 6-1 score line against Kapshay.
Fourth seed Elina Svitolina will be featuring in the semi-finals as well. The Ukrainian bounced over her compatriot, Lyudmyla Kichenok, in a three-set mouth watering match to reach this spot.
The seeded Ukrainian was trailing 5-7, 1-4 when she got back in action and pocketed the match in almost two hours and fifteen minutes on their third meeting. She now not only edged her opponent in their face-to-face meetings
but also got one step closer to lift her second career title. Kichenok quickly made on the winning track after breaking Svitolina’s serve in the last game.
On the other hand, world number 232, Svitolina, kept her losing ways in the second set and was trailing 1-4 when she made an epic comeback and reeled off next five games in a row, sealing the equaliser with a 6-4 success.
She maintained her focus in the games and cashed in the only break opportunity in the tenth game to earn the spotlight.
