Oli Broom; A frantic cyclists reaches Gabba after 14-month pedalling
Oli Broom, a British cricket fan has knocked the charity world for a six by cycling from the London to Brisbane in time for the opening Test of the latest installment of the 133-year Ashes rivalry.
Mr Broom, arrived in the Gabba ground, the venue for the Ashes opener on Wednesday after a frenetic pedalling of almost 14 months. At Gabba, he recieved a surprising reception from the England captain Andrew Staruss. He started the journey on his bike
from the historical Lord's cricket ground on 10th of October last year with 17 pals. His friends accompanied him to the English coast but crazy Oli says he just kept going.
"When we reached England's south coast, they all turned around and went home," wrote Oli on his website. "I jumped on a ferry to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/France-c2899 and later that evening began cycling across Europe.”
The hardly 29-year-old's efforts raised a charity sum of more than £30,000 for the British Neurological Research Trust and the Lord's Taverners.
According to the madcap Oli, he has pedalled through twenty three countries, and had a hit of cricket in almost all of them. Revealing about the charity amount that he collected on his way to Brisbane from London, Mr. Broom wrote: “…managed to persuade
kind donors to raise over 50,000 dollars for my chosen charities."
The 14-month thrill saw Mr Broom covering a distance of 15,500 miles on his two-wheeler. His proud family and friends have already reached Brisbane to give him a warm welcome on his arrival. Besides his family and friends, Broom was surprised by the
presence of Andrew Strauss at Gabba, the venue where Ashes opener would be contested. The English skipper presented the frantic cyclist with a signed shirt.
The cyclist said he embarked on the marathon journey after he realized “sitting behind a desk every day in London," was not his vision of life.
