Olin Browne surges into second round lead at US Senior Open Championship
Olin Browne followed his first round 64 with a 69 and surged into lead at the 32nd
edition of US Senior Open Championship. The tournament is taking place at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.
Browne, who hails from the United States of America, picked five birdies in the day against one bogey and one double-bogey to compile a score of two-under-par. The veteran was superb in finding the fairways, as he hit 60 percent of the fairways out of 15.
Moreover, he hit 14 of the Greens in Regulation, a proof of the fact that the player was fairly accurate in his short game.
The 52-year-old walked to the clubhouse with a satisfied look on his face, as he was one of the few fortunate players who managed to complete the second round after rain wrecked the course.
Commenting on the course conditions, Browne said that the USGA made Inverness more difficult by incorporating changes in it. The pin placement was changed for the second round.
“I thought the course was set up much more difficult. I thought the pins were in the corners of the greens along the edges. For example, No. 10 is on the highest spot on the left side of the green, and to get it close there, a player has to hit the exact
shot. If you're short, it's coming back; if you're long, it's staying long; if you're right, it's spinning off to the right; and if you're left, you're not hitting the green,” said Browne.
One stroke behind him, sat Mark O’Meara. The veteran teed off from the back and clamped two birdies to compile a score of 2-under-par. On his way to the front, the player picked three more birdies against a bogey and wrapped the day with a 68.
A three-way tie was seen for the third place on the leaderboard, which included Micheal Allen, Joey Sindelar and Mark Calcavecchia. The lowest score of the group was compiled by Sindelar, who birdied six holes against one bogey despite rain spoiling the
day for most golfers.
The second round was delayed due to heavy downpour and is expected to resume on Saturday morning.
