Oliver Golding, Filip Peliwo move into second round of Boys’ Singles – US Open 2011
Oliver Golding beats Brett Clark 6-3, 6-4
Thirteenth seed Oliver Golding of Great Britain dismissed Brett Clark of USA in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 in the first round at the US Open in New York on Monday. The Brit took an hour and fourteen minutes to oust his opponent in a one-sided encounter.
Golding and the American won their serve in the first five games of the opening set to take the score to 3-2 in favour of the former. The Brit broke Clark in the sixth game and consolidated on it, building a 5-2 lead. The right-handed capitalised on the single break of serve and served out the set in the ninth game, bagging it 6-3. Golding fired a couple of aces and 48 percent of the first deliveries, sealing an incredible thirteen of the fourteen points on them in the opening set.
Clark drew the first blood in the second set as he broke the Brit in the second game to grab a 2-0 lead. However, Golding broke back immediately and held his next service game to tie the score at 2-2. The Brit broke again in the ninth game and consolidated on it to seal the set 6-4.
Golding is drawn to play unseeded Ben Wagland of Australia in the second round.
Filip Peliwo defeats Andrew Whittington 7-5, 6-2
Canadian Filip Peliwo ousted eleventh seed Andrew Whittington of Australia in straight sets 7-5, 6-2 to proceed to the second round of the boys’ singles event at the Flushing Meadows. The match lasted for an hour and 20 minutes.
Peliwo drew the first blood as he broke the Australian in the opening game of the first set to take a 1-0 lead but he could not consolidate on the break of serve, dropping his own serve in the next game to equalise the score at 1-1. The Canadian took lead one again, breaking Whittington in the fifth game and holding his serve in the next game to take a 4-2 lead. The Australian broke back in the tent game to tie the score at 5-5. However, Peliwo drew the final blood as he broke the Australian in the eleventh game and served out the set at 6-5.
The Canadian did not face much resistance in the second set, breaking Whittington twice and dropping just two games to seal the set 6-2.
Peliwo is slated to take on unseeded Jae Hwan Kim of Korea in the second round.
