Oliver Golding battles past Filip Horansky into Boys’ Singles semi-final – US Open 2011
Another top seeded player crashed out of the US Open Boys’ Singles, with the sixth seed Filip Horansky of Slovakia falling to the 13th seed Briton, Oliver Golding, in the quarter-final encounter on Friday afternoon.
Golding went through some tough time before wrapping up the three-setter 5-7, 6-4, 6-1, in two hours and four minutes of play to move into the semi-final draws of the last Grand Slam tournament of the current year.
The contest was staged on the Court 17 of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Park, of Queens, New York City, United States, with a surprising result in the end. Horansky has been in prime form
the entire tournament but failed to carry on his winning impetus in the round of eight, losing to the Briton to end his US Open campaign.
Horansky was off to a brilliant start and took the opener from Golding after a stiff contest but lost his way through the rest of the sets to finish on the losing side. The Briton made a tremendous recovery in the matchup after
getting one down and cruised to victory by bagging two straight sets later in the matchup.
The Slovak’s 58 per cent precise serve earned him 42 out of 57 first serve points in the game, with Golding following at 39 of his 56 points. Five out of 12 break point conversions from the Britain proved to be the critical success
factor for him in the matchup, as Horansky stung just three out of his nine break chances to lose the contest.
Action took off right from the opener, with both teenagers trading two serve breaks each early in the game. Horansky nailed a critical break point conversion in the 11th game to clinch the opening set at 7-55 to get
one up but let Golding come back in the very next set. The Briton stung a serve break in the 10th game to seal the second set at 6-4, levelling the matchup at 1-1 and enforcing a decisive third set into play.
The Briton showed absolutely no mercy to the sixth seed Horansky in the final set and nailed two successive serve breaks to rocket to victory at 6-1, getting a berth in the semi-finals of the tournament. Golding will take on his
fellow compatriot, the 10th seed, George Morgan, for a place in the final of the US Open on Saturday.
