Oliver Golding dumps Jiri Vesely to claim Boys’ Singles title – US Open 2011
Sheer surprise for everyone present at the Flushing Meadows, as the top seeded Czech competitor, Jiri Vesely, crashed out of the final of the Boys’ Singles at the US Open, falling to the 13th seeded Briton, Oliver Golding, on Sunday
afternoon.
The three-set thriller took two hours and 18 minutes, with Golding settling the final scores at 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, to clinch the last Grand Slam trophy of the current year in style. The Briton was one set down in the game but made
a tremendous recovery to race past the top seed opponent in the later two sets to seal an emphatic victory in the end. The contest was staged on the Court 11 of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Park, of Queens, New York
City, United States. The 17-year-old British contestant had two set points in the opener but was denied both times by the sheer brilliance of Vesely, who pocketed the first set to get one up in the game.
The 13th seed Golding then turned the tables on the top seeded Czech in the next two sets to stun everyone and got his hands on the Boys’ Singles title in a convincing manner. Vesely’s 73 per cent serve earned him 47 out of 70
first serve points in the game but he was bettered by 56 out of 74 points from his opponent. The top seed squandered away nine break opportunities in the match and cashed in just one chance to finish on the losing side in the end. Golding nailed two timely
serve breaks out of his eight chances en route to victory.
The opener took off steadily, with no serve breaks seen in the opening 10 games of the match. Vesely drew the first blood in the 11th game, breaking the Briton to lead 6-5, serving for the set. The top seed closed out the first
set at 7-5, getting one up in the matchup but let the momentum away in the following set. Golding made his way back in the match with a cracking serve break in the 4th game to lead 4-1 in the second set. Vesely failed to recover from the damage done by the
break point conversion from his opponent and surrendered the second set at 3-6.
Golding went on with his impetus to break in the seventh game and closed out a memorable victory at 6-4 to grab the US Open Boys’ Singles title.
