Oliver Kurtz and Chase Wilson advance to Round 4 of ASP 4-Star Vans Pier Classic – Surfing News
America’s Oliver Kurtz and his fellow countryman Chase Wilson confirmed their place in the fourth round (Round of 64) of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 4-Star Vans Pier Classic by clinching a successful result in their respective Round 3
(Round of 96) heats that went down at the Huntington Beach Pier in California, America, on Thursday, March 29.
Hawaii’s Chris Foster and America’s Jake Halstead advanced through into the fourth round of the event as well after claiming first runner-up positions in the 13th and 14th heat respectively.
With a large crowd in attendance at the primary event site to support the local surfers and also to watch the international surfers in action up close, there was a lot of excitement in the air. The surfers found themselves getting tested by the demanding
surfing conditions, which included clean medium-sized waves though with really low frequency.
Using his local knowledge of the waves quite effectively, Kurtz managed to pile up a pretty good score to get the better of his compatriot Anthony Petruso, Hawaii’s Foster and his fellow countryman Tyler Newton in the 13th heat.
Kurtz locked his first business-wave halfway through the heat to post a 7.33 on the score-board and soon added another 5.10 points to his account to finish with a heat-total of 12.43 points. The heat-total held up until the end to eventually carry him off
to victory.
Foster made the Round 4 cut as well after finishing with a heat-total of 9.26 points, which included a 3.83 and 5.43-point wave.
Newton rounded out the third position with a heat-total of 8.57 points, whereas Petruso finished at the bottom of the pack with a heat-total of 6.33 points. The bottom-two finish by the two surfers led to their ejection from the competition.
The 14th heat featured a low-scoring contest, which eventually concluded in Wilson’s favour.
The American surfer downed his fellow countrymen Halstead and Michael Powell, along with Hawaii’s Tanner Hendrickson, by collecting a 5.50 and 4.93 off his best-two waves to finish with a heat-total of 10.43 points.
Halstead made through into the next round as well after finishing with a heat-total of 6.60 points, which included a 3.67 and 2.93-point wave.
Powell finished third with a heat-total of 6.47 points, whereas Hendrickson was forced to settle for last place after finishing with a heat-total of 6.19 points, which included a penalty for interference.
