Oliver Perez gets bullpen opportunity, Carlos Beltran’s left knee feels better
The New York Mets find themselves in an increasingly perplexing situation. With Carlos Beltran out of the roster due to a knee problem and pitching options declining over the past few weeks, things look a bit challenging for the team. Fortunately, manager
Terry Collins and general manager Sandy Alderson are working out a strategy to get the most out of the players. Oliver Perez, who has done poorly in the rotation recently, is being given a shot at a bullpen role. Carlos Beltran, on the other hand, has told
the team that his left knee feels better.
Perez was given a chance to do well in the Starter’s position but his disappointing performance in Spring Training has pushed him closer to the exit door. Perez now has a chance at a bullpen role, but that comes with the knowledge that if he is unable to
make the cut, the club will slash him off the roster card. After all, the $12 million salary package is not something the club can pick up out of good will. Collins highlighted the decision in his own words.
"We told him that we have decided that we think the place where he would probably help us the most is being a situational lefty," manager Terry Collins said. "He said he understood and would do the best he could to help us out of the bullpen."
Beltran on the other hand, had been kept away from playing on the field following a left knee tendinitis. The player has been performing well recently in training and reflected his condition to Collins, who confidently communicated the situation to the press.
"He said his leg felt a lot better," Collins said Wednesday afternoon. "He showed me a couple of things that he couldn't do yesterday that he could do today. It was a pretty good day. As I told him, I'm looking forward to probably early next week to hopefully
get him back in there."
The player had previously been out of action due to a right knee injury for 14 months.
